Die Klein Kaptein is ’n kereltjie wat met ’n skoorsteenpyp, ’n sinkbad, ’n stoelpoot en ’n fietsketting sy skip die “Nooitlek” weer seevaardig maak. Wanneer die skroef, gemaak van gesmelte bronsmunte, ook klaar is, skep ’n groot brander die skip van die hoe duin af waar dit gestrand het. Die avontuurlike tog van die “Nooitlek” met die Klein Kaptein en sy kamerade Dik Druif, Marinka en Bang Tonie kan nou begin. Hulle vaar oor die oseane, kom by vreemde lande aan en trotseer talle gevare. Niemand het nog ooit die Rooi prinses gesien nie, want sy het agter die mure van die Wit Toringpaleis grootgeword. Eers op haar twaalfde verjaardag kom sy uit om in 'n feestelike optog aan die volk bekendgestel te word. Dit is 'n lang stoet van rytuie vol waardige persone, met heel aan die einde die rooi koets waarin die prinses sit. Die volk rek hulle nekke om haar uiteindelik te sien, maar voor enigeen 'n glimp van haar kan kry, gebeur iets verskrikliks. Woeste rowers storm nader en ontvoer die prinses met koets en al in 'n wilde rit die stad uit en die wildernis in. “Hoe vreeslik!” dink almal.
